I see this point of yours, and I suspect that the d4+2 is an attempt to reflect the fact that a rondell-dagger pierces anything short of plate armor. This becomes a dilemma, when two dudes with 3HP spars without armor and with rondelldaggers...
But this argument that it should be possible to do only 1 damage should apply to all weapons, not only the dagger. It should be possible to only do 1 damage with a helebard as well, so perhaps finding one dice for every weapon is the solution; Letting the dagger do 1d6 damage and the helebard 1d20 damage?
In my houserules, the grade of sucess depends how much extra damage you can do, not critical hits; this can allso help to this "dilemma". In my houserules, someone who manges his dagger-skill with a margin of -say 50% gets +1d6 damage. If he have a strength bonus of another +1d6, the dagger does impressively 3d6 damage! If the starving undernourished peassent "Ben" picks up a dagger, stabs with it and hits with a margin of 0, he'd end up doing the only 1d6 dam.
3) I understand your point about the daggers, that's what I was thinking too. But the nature of the "+2" means that the MINIMUM damage of that weapon is more than the minimum damage of a broadsword? Than a POLEAXE? (And BTW, I'd agree that anything over 16-18" is really a shortsword, not a dagger, no matter what it's named, and anything over 30" is probably a broadsword, generally speaking.
