Page 57 of the Deluxe Edition All-In-One book disagrees with you; it
specifies that the critical hit does maximum damage (though you still
roll your damage modifier from STR+SIZ normally), and gets past any
armour. It uses the example of a broadsword used in non-impaling mode.

Impaling weapons, of course, automatically do DOUBLE maximum damage
with no armour.
