When Jabari and Eva awaken, battered, bloody, and bruised, in the cages
they find themselves in conversation with one Johnny Bigbush, who was the
originator of the rumour of the city beneath the sands from Darwin. Having
worked with the shipping company, he was given up for sacrifice to Dr.
Robert Huston and his sand-bat cult leaders. Johnny explains the story of
the Sand Bat and the Rainbow Serpent, and how the Serpent tricked the Bat
beneath the seas. Huston intends to summon and revive the Bat.
But Bigbush also explains that he also carries the spirit within him which
can heal, and one must suck the fluid from the Rainbow Serpent. Eva is
especially dubious but her fears are mollified when it is explained that
blood will do, "although the other way also works". After sucking of the
Bigbush's blood, he was clearly exhausted and Jabari and Eva
disconcertingly felt their wound close up and heal themselves.
Back in the Mimi cavern, the slightly less battered Stephan and Jack Brady
are offered some food by a rather comely mimi woman who telepathically
explains that the food contains healing properties. Jack realised that
this probably meant that, like the myth of the faeries, that this would
mean that he would have to remain with the mimi, but went along with it.
After eating the food, he immediately felt his wounds heal, and he grew an
inch. For his part, Stephan asked for the mimi for a review of what they
knew of the layout of the city, which was disturbingly flashed in his
mind.
Sufficiently strengthened, Stephan and Jack ventured back in the corridors
of the city, quickly overcoming with the leader of a mining party. The
miners themselves appeared to be sluggish and without will, and were
quickly commandeered by Stephen and Jack. From there they made to the room
where Jabari and Eva had been placed, only to discover they were absent,
causing much distress to Stephan.
Meanwhile Dr. Robert Huston appeared Jabari and Eva and explained his
plans to revive the great beings within the city. He waxxed lyrically (and
appropriately) of the vastness and ancient powers of the place and from
beyond the stars. Jabari feigned interest whilst Eva feigned madness, and
Huston and his cronies took them to the Purple Temple where disturbing
statues of the Outer Gods where protected by monstrous winged beings.
Whilst this was happening, Stephan and Jack discovered the multi-level
headquarters of Dr. Huston. Unable to release the prisoners, they provided
Bigbush with a rifle which he hid. They also discovered Huston's mining
equipment, dynamite and blasting caps, but most importantly his rambling
notes, which did contain some very interesting information about his
summoning plans, but also of a strange alien time-traveller, a member of
the Great Race of Yith, which he had captured.
With an objective in mind, Stephen and Jack sought out the alien with
vigour. It was not long before they discovered its prison, trapped behind
an electrical field in a room of fascinating technologies. The alien
communicated with them telepathically, explaining how to turn off the
electrical field - but most remarkably there was also a mental meeting
with no less than Lillian St. John! Apparently after being interned at the
Parisian Sanatorium, she was contacted by a member of the Great Race who
took her mind and body into the future - 1962 in the Belgian Congo no
less. Lillian did express some difficulty in being in 1923, 1925, and 1962
simulatenously and being part of a hive mind. With its release the
Yithian, provided access to several fully charged lightning guns.
As this junction, Huston and his cronies returned Jabari and Eva to their
cells. Eva noticed the gun and, just as the cell door was opened, smashed
a telling blow on to Dr. Huston's head. From there a frightful melee
erupted at the end of which Huston had been crushed to death under the
stampede of escaping prisoners and his crony cultists equally relieved of
their mortal existence. After the battle, and the party reunited, Stephan
explained to Bigbush the ward of the Eye of Light and Darkness. Bigbush
convinced the Koories to help their rescuers and found several among them
who were good shots with the rifle to take up additional lightning guns.
Returning to the Purple Temple, the winged guardians within were no match
to the concerted attacks of a dozen lightning guns and were quickly
overcome. Then for the following day Stephan led the creation of the Elder
Sign and the ward of The Eye of Light and Darkness, placing it within the
sanctum and thus ensuring that the Outer Gods could not be brought here
and the great triangular renting of the skies above the Indian Ocean at
the time of the eclipse would not occur.
The following day the need to confront the Flying Polyps came to the fore.
The first one was relatively straight forward; exiting the mineshaft the
concerted targetting was overwhelming in its devastation. But then
forewarned came another two and whilst Jack was able to spot the
shimmering of one in the wind, they arrived in their temporary invisible
form, and issued forth a great blast of wind, which ripped the skin off
one's flesh. One poor brave Koori who stood up to confront the Polyps
shouting at the windstorm was completely stripped of flesh and muscle.
Many others suffered grevious wounds and were blasted to near-death by the
gale-force winds.
Making a hasty retreat the party holed up in the relative safety of the
Great City. Stephan came to the idea however of making use of the dynamite
and gasoline. As the Polyps outside bashed on the hatch, a powerful
concentration of explosives were placed near the entrance and then
released with a great explosive force which blasted these beings out of
existence. The Polyps were no more, the cult of the Sand Bat was
destroyed, and the world had been saved from the coming of Nyalathotep and
the Outer Gods, at least this time.
Although all of humanity had been saved, there was still some bittersweet
conclusions. Jack, now increasingly feeling attached to his mimi
development would remain behind. As for the cage of women pregnant with
some disgusting reptilian monstrosity there was only one solution; many
had already seen the results of this birth and how survival was not a
great option. Taking Jack's Tommy Gun, Stephan carried out a massive mercy
slaughter. The lightning guns were returned to the Yithian who was making
use of the zombie miners to further excavate the City Beneath the Sands.
With their Koori friends assisting, Stephan, Eva, and Jabari prepared
themselves for the long walk back to Cuncudgerie.
